Sports

Badminton is a very popular sport in Hwa Chong and it is our Sports for All sport this year. This is a sport that requires lots of skills, stamina and agility and teamwork. This teamwork spirit that is learnt and acquired will be extremely helpful in future such as during Project Competition. In the Hwa Chong Badminton Team, much emphasis is placed on improving our physical fitness. adminton skills such as netting, lobbing, smashing, dropping, footwork etc. are also improved through various drills and exercises. Hard work and teamwork have allowed the badminton team to obtain commendable results where we have attained the top 4 positions in West Zone for the past 10 years. Such results make Hwa Chong one of the best badminton team in this zone.

basketball

Basketball

Sports

Basketball is another sport that needs extreme agility, stamina and strength. Hence, players adopt creative methods of training which aims to improve theie dexterity, and heightening their responsiveness. The team often spars with local and international teams through friendly matches to gain more court experiences. Such sessions also provided excellent opportunities to establish new friendship with players from different schools.

Canoeing

Sports

Canoeing is all about the need for speed! A fast and exhilarating sport which trains you both physically and mentally. A Hwa Chong canoeist is an all-rounder, doing very well in all aspects of school life, such as academics, sports and leadership. We have consistently produced many student leaders and scholars who are also medal winners. A common misconception is that being well-built is a prerequisite to be a canoeist. However, the truth is even the skinniest or the fattest person can be the one who holds numerous gold trophies as long as he shows commitment and sheer determination. Professional coaching and world-class equipment is provided free-of-charge. Last but not least, the Hwa Chong Canoeing team clinched the top three positions for both divisions for the past years, an academic achievement many sports CCAs envy. So if you crave for speed and want to develop your potential to the fullest, join canoeing!

Cross Country

Sports

Passion, hunger, thirst. Our cross country team competes in a variety of events, ranging from X-country to long distance events in track & field. We have friendly and experienced coaches who train together with us. Fencing

Sports

Fencing is a sport comprising of 3 weapons, namely foil, epee and sabre. It requires a delicate balance of technique, physical prowess and strategic thinking. Founded only in 2009, Hwa Chong Fencing Club (HCFC) has had a relatively short but nonetheless fruitful history. Wasting no time, we clinched the B and C division boys championship titles in 2011. To guide us we have coach Wu Jie, currently the no.1 foilist in Singapore. Teaching us since the founding of our club, we owe our achievements to him. He is also the current head coach and owner of fencing club Absolute Fencing.

Gymnastics

Sports

Gymnastics is one of Hwa Chong's top sports groups that has consistently remained a top contender at the Nationals for over two decades. Our exceptional achievements include cleansweeps of all three C, B, and A Divisions, accumulated over these many glorious years. Technically, the sport comprises six separate apparatus which all our gymnasts train. These include the floor exercise, vault, pommel horse, parallel bars, horizontal bar, and the rings. These various constituents are all equally challenging, and stretch a gymnast to his very limits.

Judo

Sports

Judo, the "gentle way", can be classified as a martial art, a combat sport, and a philosophy which originated in Japan. Judo was founded by Dr Jirogo Kano in 1882 and has since become the model for modern Japanese martial arts. Schools have been competing in team championships for over 40 years since 1966. The judo club was started in Hwa Chong Institution over a decade ago, and has since achieved outstanding results. Coached by Mr. Tang Soon Onn, a SEA games gold medallist, HCI judokas have obtained excellent results in the National School Judo championships last year.

Shooting Club

Sports

Shooting Club has won many awards both nationally and internationally. We are a close group of people who share the same passion and strive together to achieve outstanding performance. Many of our shooters are selected into the National Youth Team (NYT) and the National Training Team (NTT). They represented Singapore in overseas competitions such as the South East Asia Shooting Championships (SEASA). We provide our shooters with the best equipment available so they can maximize their potential and hopefully represent Singapore in the Olympic Games someday. Although it is true that air rifle is not physically demanding, it requires the utmost determination and a strong passion to be able to emerge as champions. Do you have what it takes to be one?

Softball Club

Sports

The Hwa Chong Softball Club was formed in 1991. The objectives of the club not only focus on excelling in softball as a team game, values like discipline and devotion are continually stressed by our coach, who, besides teaching us the art of being good softball players also imparts important life skills which contribute to our education and long-term development. The Hwa Chong Softball Club currently has a strength of 50.

Over the past few years, the Squash Club has achieved commendable results, constantly ranking amongst the top 3 schools at the National Schools Squash Championships.

Table Tennis

Sports

2008 has been yet another rewarding year for The Hwa Chong Table Tennis team. Both the C and B division teams secured the champions in the West Zone Table Tennis Championships. These achievements were the results of tough training. Both division members have undergone intensive training throughout the year to improve their skills and build up stamina and confidence which are key factors in determining performance, especially during tournaments. Weekly training sessions up to four times a week, fitness training programmes and friendly matches were part and parcel of our hectic schedule.

Tennis

Sports

Introducing the Hwa Chong Tennis Team! We're a bunch of fun-loving and enthusiastic students who just can't get enough of tennis. The team prides itself with excellence in physical and mental prowess. Tennis is enjoyed by millions of recreational players and is also a hugely popular worldwide spectator sport. It is a highly competitive game played between either two players or two teams of two players each. With our coach and team spirit, we are certainly making great progress. So come join us!

Track & Field

Sports

Our team of committed athletes has been the champion in the National Schools Track and Field Championships for the past 35 years. The team has proven itself to be resilient in times of adversity, upholding the '自强不息' spirit. Despite athletes taking part in their individual events, they still hold a common identity as '华中子弟', coming together as a whole and doing the school proud. The Team was awarded Best CCA Award 2006 & 2007 for its outstanding performance.

Volleyball

Sports

Throughout the year, the volleyball team experienced untold moments of catharsis as the players acquire skills aimed at propelling them to higher peaks. Training sessions were increased and more friendly matches were organised so that our volleyball team can gain more competition experience. Our 'B' and 'C' division teams took part in the West Zone Schools Volleyball Tournament. Despite facing new challenges such as new players and seasoned opponents who were taller, the team remained undaunted throughout the matches and put up a good fight. The team's sheer drive to raise their own standard at each match once again exemplified our school's spirit of "zi qiang bu xi" (自强不息). We are confident that with our undying spirit and effort, the spotlight will shine on us in the years to come.

Waterpolo

Sports

Waterpolo is a sport best described as a combination of swimming, football, basketball, rugby and wrestling. Beyond physical toughness, it is a team effort, built on perseverance, resilience and camaraderie. The Hwa Chong Waterpolo team has a long and illustrious history, and has been a source of pride and glory to the school. We have consistently performed well in the National Schools Waterpolo Championships, and we have produced many players who make the National Team. Waterpolo is a rigorous sport, and training is tough. However, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The team has organised training trips to China, and Malaysia annually. Every year, we also have our Waterpolo camps, where the bonding and having fun are the order of the day.

Wushu

Sports

The Hwa Chong Wushu Club is a combination of a sports and performing arts CCA. As the name implies, our club focuses on Wushu which is an exhibition sport derived from traditional martial arts. The practice of Wushu involves martial art patterns, manoeuvres and sometimes the use of weapons. The forms in Wushu comprise basic movements based on traditional Chinese martial arts. In addition, the club also performs the 24 Festive Drums which is a fusion of Wushu and traditional Chinese drums. The 24 Festive Drums are often called upon to perform at important school events such as the Founders' Day and the welcoming ceremony of various ministers and guests-of-honour who grace our school events.

NCC

National Cadet Corps

Uniform Groups

With a blend of footdrills, armed rifle drills and precision drill training, coupled with rigorous Physical Training framework and exposure to various adventure activities like mountaineering, HCINCC aims to bring out the disciplined, determined and dare-to-do spirit in their cadets, instilling comradeship to enrich your learning and leadership process. Life in NCC will be fraught with obstacles, yet these develop the mental strength and capability to face reality, skills that are neglected in youths nowadays. And the final product is a cadet that has developed and growed through group dynamics and motivation.

NPCC

National Police Cadet Cops

Uniform Groups

The core NPCC training syllabus, includes drill, campcraft, survival skills and revolver shooting, the Hwa Chong NPCC Unit also introduces cadets to community service under the Community Awareness and Response Programme (CARP) and enrichment courses via the implementation of the Learning Experiences and Aspects Programme (LEAP), where cadets are given opportunities to participate in a wide variety of outdoor activities such as swimming and kayaking. Over the past few years, the unit has also been organising the Uniformed Groups Bowling Championships for cadets from all nine uniformed groups in Singapore. Through organising such major events, cadets are given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, to learn to overcome adversity.

St John's Ambulance Brigade

Uniform Groups

Hwa Chong St. John Ambulance Brigade has constantly achieved commendable results in competitions, produced distinguished Hwa Chongians of outstanding character and performance, and has never failed to be awarded the Corps Achievement Award (Gold). Our cadets are well-trained and proficient in first-aid skills, have regularly served in countless school events and provided emergency first-aid assistance even in everyday life. Also, they go through the rigour of foot drills and military-styled discipline, before emerging eventually as fine gentlemen who have an important and fundamental set of core values imbued in them. Besides aiding cadets in their personal growth, we place a strong emphasis on the forging of esprit de corps amongst the cadets. It is through these experiences of sharing tears and laughter in a communal environment that cadets develop important team-working and leadership skills that will prove to be highly useful to their success in life in the future.

Scouts

Uniform Groups

Scouting, is a worldwide youth movement with the aim of supporting young people in their physical, mental and spiritual development, so that they may play constructive roles in society. The movement employs the Scout method, a program of informal education with an emphasis on practical outdoor activities. Hwa Chong scout troop was set up in 1919. Up till now in 2012, the troop comprises of a Scout unit, a Venture scout unit, a Rover Scout unit and a scout alumni. Two of the most unique features in the HCI scout troop are the Bugle Band and the Lion Dance troupe, of which the former is the last of its kind in Singapore while the latter is also a very rare feature of scout troops in Singapore. Hwa Chong's Venture Scouts (HCVS) have done the school proud by sweeping 5 out of the 10 prestigious President's Scout Awards (PSA) given out nationwide in 2011. The President's Scout Award is presented to our nation's most outstanding Venture Scouts. It is given in recognition of their excellent leadership and personal performance, their dedication to the scout movement, as well as their service to the community. Choir

Choir

Aesthetics

The Hwa Chong Choir was founded in 2003 as the Vocal Ensemble by a group of students who were deeply passionate about singing. Though it had a small membership, the Vocal Ensemble left a deep impression on the school populace by performing at various events. With a large repertoire of many songs spanning different genres, it has performed at several events, such as the HCJC Choir's concert as well as festive celebrations and school assemblies. We also frequently collaborate with other choirs, be it choral workshops with River Valley High and CHIJ St Joseph Institution, or guest performing at the Nanyang Girls' High School Choir concert, enchanting audiences with their cacophony of voices.

English Drama

Aesthetics

The English Drama Club is quite easily one of the most vibrant CCAs in the school - apart from staging self-directed productions, we often attend public performances, collaborate with other schools, and even organise our own drama camps. Staging a theatre production necessarily requires a diversity of talent, and the EDC has that in abundance - actors, costumes, stagehands, technical crew- every member has his own part to play, and don't believe me? Watch out for our next public performance!

Piano Ensemble

Aesthetics

Debuted 2 years ago and comprising 8 first CCA members who are specially selected for their talent and passion in the pianoforte, we host the periodic Piano Masterclasses with local and international pianists such as Ms Chisato Kusunoki, Piano Instructors from the NUS Conservatory of Music and Mr Ong Lip Tat. Our repertoire stretches from the Baroque Era with Bach's Fugues and Inventions, the Classical Roccoco, the Romantic's Chopin and Debussy as well as downright Contemporary pieces. In addition, we hold music composition workshops and music therapy sessions at hospices for the old and infirm. Our boys also prepare for ABRSM's theory examinations in their weekly theory classes. At the Old Parliament House, in 2011, we hold our first concert, which was supported by gifted pianists from other schools including Dunman High and National Junior College. In the pipeline, in 2012, we plan to produce Hwa Chong's very first piano music album collection.

String Orchestra

Aesthetics

The Hwa Chong Institution String Orchestra, since its inception in the late 1980s, has grown from strength to strength, striving for excellence and greater heights. In the international music scene, the Hwa Chong Institution String Orchestra also emerged as first runner up in the open category of the 2006 International Gothenburg Music festival. Youth Flying Club

Clubs & Societies

The Hwachong Youth Flying Club was established in HCI in the year 2004, as a second EP3, under the umbrella of the Singapore Youth Flying Club. Since its formation, it has always been actively empowering individuals who have a deep passion for flying to pursue their interests, opening a gateway to learning about man's successful conquest over the skies, and in turn rewarding them with the chance of achieving the PPL in year 5 and 6 — Private pilot's license in short — A prestigious award given to only those deserving candidates after intense rounds of interviews and tests. With this license at hand, one can then be considered a true 'pilot'. At the secondary level, YFC serves to introduce all members to aviation, and prepares members with a deep passion for flight by inculcating them with a strong knowledge base, through camps, interactive lessons, normal flight trainings, simulation trainings, and joy rides on various military aircraft-all of which gives a strong headstart when applying for a future career as a pilot. Apart from flying, SYFC is also considered a Uniformed Group which allows members to develop a strong sense of discipline, teamwork and leadership.
