HCI Future School

This section of our page contains Hwa Chong's goals for the future. Do have a nice time checking out on what this extraordinary school is trying to achieve.

"The proposal for HCI caters to the multidimensional learning needs of its web-savvy students by leveraging web 2.0 technologies such as blogging and video-conferencing in its learning curriculum.  Through a virtual campus called the Hwa Chong Nexus, HCI students will be able to collaborate via social interactions, share information for brainstorming sessions and gather feedback through peer reviews"

The focus of this program is to engineer a borderless learning environment that empowers students to be self-directed and independent learners. The industry partner for HCI is the ST Electronics Consortium which comprises the following members:

• Addest Technovation Pte Ltd

• FiF Techonologies LLP

• Microsoft Singapore Pte Ltd

• Sky Media Pte Ltd

• Temasek Polytechnic

• Vantage Portal Systems Pte Ltd

The technological innovations at HCI are centered on Hwa Chong Nexus which consists of an integrated learning management system that fosters self-directed and independent learners.

The 4 key focus areas are to :

  • Setup a Global Academy

  • Offer Advanced research programmes with partners worldwide

  • Create Diverse learning environments, and

  • Evolve new values.

Set up a global Academy

Learning in the future will no longer be confined to the Hwa Chong campus at Bukit Timah.  Instead, learning will transcend boundaries between subjects, classrooms, schools, countries and cultures.  Working in communal space with notebooks, teachers and students choose to spend as much (or as little) time as they wish in school.  Space and time become less standardized and more flexible.

It will make use of the iLearning management programme.

iLearning Management System:

-A gateway into a suite of portals, functional modules, and communication tools

-Enables students to acquire new knowledge through self-study.

-Assessment tools for peer review

-Course Builder that enables teachers to customise lesson activities and add variety to students’ learning pathways.

Offer Advanced research programmes with partners worldwide

Hwa Chong's Future School will involve students in virtual mentorship schemes with industry captains and experts overseas.  Students will also enjoy industrial attachment with leading global companies and take on self-directed research.  Students will negotiate their learning beyond the confines of the Hwa Chong classroom and co-create knowledge with peers, teachers, adjunct professors and specialist-mentors.

We will be using the Research and Partnership Portal

Research and Partnership Portal:

  • A community-based application

  • Portal brings together alumni, industry partners, experts, school staff, parents and students (both local and overseas)

  • Enables mentor-pupil partnership searches to be made, online conferencing, collaboration and real-time sharing.

Create diverse learning environments

The school intends to transform its various physical spaces into a vibrant and stimulating environment where learning takes place anytime, anywhere.  The key levers include technologies like high-speed wireless broadband and network computers for peer-to-peer collaboration within and outside the school compound.

Creative and critical thinking dispositions will be nurtured through collaborative explorations and discussions conducted in real and virtual learning environments. Independent learning is facilitated through the use of online case-studies and course modules hosted on e-learning platforms.

We will be using the HCTube.

HCTube:

HCI’s answer to YouTube, this is a personalised site for teachers and students to upload and stream educational content and collaborate, much like the Khan Academy, but is limited to internal use within Hwachong's teachers and students.

Evolve new values

With technology, the role of teacher is more important than ever. Increasingly as students begin to take greater charge and control of what they want to study and when and how, the school must continue to provide the moral guidance for young people to keep their bearing and direction in the emerging global culture.

  • New subject electives may be offered such as those of food and nutrition, economics etc.

  • New project plans drafted by the school to improve our school compound.

    • New indoor stadium hall

    • Probably a new computer lab using new macbooks
